What to put on when you've got ten minutes and a full head

You do not have two hours.

Ten minutes is enough to change the state you're in, as long as you don't spend it deciding. Put on something without words and don't wait for it to finish. You aren't trying to arrive somewhere calm. You're trying to not hand the last hour straight to the next one.

That's the whole problem, and almost nothing online is built for it. Search for something to calm down to and you get an eight hour sleep video, a two hour ambient set, a twelve hour rain loop. All of it made on the assumption that you are about to have an evening.

You're not about to have an evening. You have ten minutes between one thing and the next, and a head that hasn't stopped since about half past six this morning.

The gap is real, and it is short

It has a shape. It is the ten minutes in the car park before you go in. The gap between the call ending and the next one starting. The bit after everyone has gone upstairs and before you follow them. It's rarely longer than fifteen minutes and it's almost never planned.

Most advice doesn't survive contact with it. Sit for twenty minutes. Do a body scan. Journal three pages. Those are good things and they belong to a life with more room in it than this one has today.

What actually fits in ten minutes is smaller. Something to put on. Something that doesn't need setting up, or a decision, or you to be good at it.

Why the long video still helps, and where it stops

Put that on and start it anywhere. You don't have to begin at the beginning of a two hour track. There's no build, no arc waiting to pay off. Any minute of it sounds like any other minute, which is a feature, not a shortcut. That is what the whole category is for, and we set out why properly over in ambient drone music.

So a long video works in a short gap. Press play, let it run, stop when you have to go.

But there is a real limit, and it is honest to name it. Ten minutes into a two hour video, you stop it mid air. Nothing has closed. You go back in slightly better and slightly interrupted. For a lot of people that's completely fine and the rest of this page is unnecessary.

For the rest, the thing that helps is something built to be the length you actually have.

What we made for the short version

The app is the answer here, and this is the one page in this library where saying so is honest rather than pushy.

Same sound. Cut to the length of a real gap. There are shorter pieces to put on, a few minutes of breath if you want the structure, and short practices that don't ask you to sit still for half an hour or know what you're doing. You open it, you pick one, it ends on purpose instead of being cut off.

That last part matters more than it sounds. A thing that finishes leaves you somewhere. A thing you abandon leaves you mid sentence.

If ten minutes is all you ever get

Then ten minutes is the practice. Not a smaller version of a real one. The actual one.

This is worth saying plainly because the wellness version of this conversation tends to imply you're doing a reduced edition of something better, and that a proper person would have found an hour. A proper person with your week wouldn't have found an hour either.

Short and often does more for most people than long and never. The gap in the car park, taken most days, is a real thing. The hour on the cushion, taken twice and then abandoned in March, is not.

If you want to stay a while

Two more, for when the gap turns out longer

Free, and nothing to sign up for.

If it's a specific kind of loud in your head rather than general noise, anxiety relief music goes at that directly.

You're not failing at rest because you can't find an hour.

You're being asked to solve an hour shaped problem with ten minutes, which is the wrong shape, and no amount of discipline fixes a shape.

Get something that fits the ten minutes instead. Then take the ten minutes, most days, and let that be the whole of it.
