Notes from the House

When you wake at 3am

It is a real hour. Not a figure of speech.

Waking somewhere between two and four is common enough to be unremarkable, and it feels remarkable every time, because the house is silent and you're the only thing in it that's switched on.

Why starting something long feels impossible

Here is the practical trap of the hour.

You're awake, and you know that putting something on might help, and the effort of reaching for the phone feels enormous. Not because you're lazy. Because the screen is bright, and unlocking it means seeing the time, and seeing the time starts the arithmetic. Four hours and ten minutes until the alarm. Now three fifty five.

And then whatever you open has to be chosen. At 3am, choosing is the expensive part.

So the useful version of this isn't a recommendation. It's a setup, done earlier, so that at 3am there's nothing to decide.

Start it before you sleep

Music for Restless Nights

8 Hours · 528 Hz + 174 Hz

The case for eight hours specifically

Long tracks look excessive until you've used one at this hour.

The value isn't that you will listen to eight hours. It's that nothing ends. There's no point in the night where the sound stops and the silence comes back and finds you still awake, which is what happens with a forty minute track and is worse than not putting anything on at all.

It also means you can start it before you sleep and let it run through, so the 3am version of you doesn't have to start anything. It's already going. That's the whole design.

Screen down, brightness at its lowest, and let it run.

What the sound is doing, plainly

It's giving the room a floor.

At 3am a silent house isn't neutral. Every small noise arrives at full size, and so does every thought, because there's nothing else in the room competing for the space. Something continuous underneath means the quiet isn't empty, and small sounds stop being events.

That's the honest description. We aren't going to tell you it will put you back to sleep, because we don't know that and nobody selling it to you does either. What we can tell you is what the sound is and how it's built, which is set out in 528 Hz and ambient drone music.

If you do not go back to sleep

Some nights you won't, and the hour is more bearable when that isn't treated as a failure in progress.

Lying in the dark with something steady on is a different night from lying in the dark doing the arithmetic. You will be tired tomorrow either way. You will be less scraped by it if the hours were quiet rather than spent negotiating with the clock.

The one practical thing worth knowing: if you've been awake long enough that the bed has become the place where you're awake, getting up briefly and coming back is more useful than lying there insisting. Keep the lights low. Keep the sound on.

Setting it up so it is already there

The setup takes a minute, at a sensible hour, once.

Have the track queued or the app on the home screen. Have the volume set low enough that it won't startle you and high enough to hear over the house. Have the phone face down and out of arm's reach if you can, because the arithmetic starts with the screen.

For the hour itself

SOVA Within on iPhone

For the hour when opening anything at all is the hard part.

Free to start.

Get the app

The reason the app earns its place here isn't features. It's that it opens to something you can start without reading, at an hour when reading is the thing you're trying not to do.

Two more for the same hour

To leave running all night

  • Sleep Music 10 hours · to start before you sleep and leave running all night
  • Music for Sleep 8 hours · the same job, a slightly warmer bed

Free, and nothing to sign up for.

If the waking is happening most nights rather than occasionally, music for deep sleep covers what to put on and how long to leave it. If it's the daytime version of the same loudness, try anxiety relief music.

3am isn't a personal failing and it isn't a sign of anything in particular.

It's an hour that a great many people are awake in, separately, in silent houses. The only part of it you can really arrange is whether the room is empty when you get there.

Set the sound up while it's still a reasonable hour, and let 3am find it already running.
