Sound for working, and what this isn't
Someone told Gina she uses SOVA at work.
That wasn't what it was built for, and it's worth being straight about that before anything else on this page.
This is not focus music
There's an entire category called focus music and it's enormous. Lo-fi beats, study streams, productivity playlists, things engineered to keep you moving through a task. Some of it's very good. None of it's what we make.
We make long, wordless, unchanging sound with tones held underneath it. There's no beat to carry you, no build to ride, nothing designed to give you momentum. If what you want is something to power through a spreadsheet to, there are people doing that far better than we ever will, and you should go and use theirs.
So the honest question isn't whether this is good focus music. It's: when does a thing like this actually help while you're working?

The kind of work it suits
Not all work is the same shape, and that turns out to be the whole answer.
It suits work you already know how to do. The admin, the tidying up of something, the third pass over a document, the sorting of things into other things. Work where the difficulty is staying with it rather than figuring it out.
It suits work you're avoiding. The task that has been on the list for nine days, where the actual obstacle is that starting feels enormous. Something continuous in the room lowers the height of the step, not because it motivates you, but because the silence you were sitting in stops being the thing you're sitting in.
It suits open-plan and it suits houses with other people in them, for the plain reason that it covers noise you don't control without introducing noise that wants your attention.
The kind of work it does not suit
Anything where you need to think in words.
Writing, mostly. Reading closely. Anything where you're holding a sentence in your head and turning it over. Wordless helps there, but unchanging can go too far, and some people find a held drone under language work makes the whole thing feel underwater.
And it doesn't suit work that needs pace. There's nothing in this to push against. If your problem is that you're dragging, this won't lift you, and something with a pulse will serve you better.
What we can and cannot tell you
We can tell you what the sound is: long, wordless, one or more tones held, no melodic movement. The full case for why that shape works differently from a song is in ambient drone music.
We can tell you what we do: we build the tones separately and lay them underneath, because the tools that generate the bed can't tune reliably on their own. That's set out in 528 Hz.
We can't tell you it will make you more productive, or improve your concentration, or change what your brain does. There's a large industry making those claims and we aren't joining it. What we know is that a woman who uses this app told us it works for her at her desk, and that when we looked at why, it came down to the kind of work rather than anything happening to her.

For a real block of work
SOVA Within on iPhone
For the ninety minutes you actually blocked out, not the three hours you optimistically queued.

If the reason work is hard today is the day rather than the task, stress relief is the better page.
This won't make you focus. Nothing you put on will.
What it can do is stop the room being silent while you do work you already know how to do, and make the first ten minutes of a task you've been avoiding slightly less steep.
That's a small honest claim, and it's the only one we have.
